Sir Herbert Maxwell was himself a much published author. Studies in the Topography of Galloway was published in 1887 and his last work Evening Memories was published in 1932.
His 1923 work Flowers, a Garden Notebook is entirely illustrated by his own paintings.
Sir Herbert Maxwell has been described as ‘probably the most gifted scholarly country gentleman in Scotland for the duration of his long life.’ He was an MP and Lord Lieutenant. He was a prolific writer, author of sixty works in a wide variety of fields: archaeology, philology, arboriculture and horticulture, fishing and shoting, history and biography.
Herbert Maxwell painted and drew throughout his long life. He painted local scenes and sketched people and places but is perhaps best remembered for the watercolours of the plants in his garden at Monreith.
