Portrait and miniature painter. According to McEwan (see bibliography) "Educated at Dumfries Academy where he received encouragement from a Dumfries lady with whose help he went to Edinburgh in 1833 to learn drawing at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools under Sir William Allan". Went to London in 1836 where he received patronage from the Duke of Buccleuch and members of the royal family. Although London based, he kept a house in Lasswade and latterly in Kelso. His brother was a successful woodcarver.
