He was born in East Wemyss, Fife and went to work as a miner aged 11.  He saved enough to go to Edinburgh College of Art, but left in 1914 to join up with the Black Watch.  He won the Military Medal in 1916 and was seriously wounded.  On medical advice, he moved to Newton Stewart, the place his family had come from in 1932. he subsequently went into business in Glasgow but returned to Newton stewart in 1945 and painted from then until his wife died.  He specialised in floral arrangements and local scenes.
