Served with KOSB in India in World War 2. Joined staff of Edinburgh College of Art, 1947. Appointed head of Drawing and Painting, 1960, retired 1982. Knighted 1976. Mary and Alick Sturrock can be seen in his painting of Ann Redpath’s flat at 7 London Street (SNPG file).

An early influence was the annual exhibition of the Dumfries and Galloway Fine Art Society.
