Notes:

Samuel Prout made frequent visits to the continent between 1819 and the 1840s.  Picturesque gothic architecture appealed to him greatly.

 

Prout’s views of Venice predated those of JMW Turner.  Ruskin wrote "Sometimes I tire of Turner but never of Prout."
