John Galloway Reid is interesting as his surviving work in Dumfries is that of a patient at the Crichton Royal Institution which he entered in 1904 as a private patient.  He was the son of a Free Church Minister at Hurlford and and is described as a clerk in the census records. As a ‘parole patient’ he was allowed out of the hospital and was able to paint in the neighbourhood.  While his case notes indicate that his delusions included his belief that he was a great artist and sculptor, one note described him as ‘a capital artist’.  By 1915 his work is described as not up to his former work but he continued to sketch outside.
