Walter Newall began his design career in partnership with an upholsterer and cabinet maker in the Dumfries firm of Newall, Hannah and Reid.

Nothing appears to be known of his architectural training although his knowledge of contemporary building styles suggests that he must have received training from a significant architect.

Walter Newall designed churches, country houses and smaller buildings across Dumfries and Galloway, including Moat Brae, the garden of which inspired J M Barrie the writer of Peter Pan.
