Born Urioch, Balmaghie, where his father was farm manager.  A neighbour of S R Crockett.  Settled at the Studio, Dundrennan in 1887, shortly after his marriage in 1886 to Margaret Bennett of Fagra Mill, Rerrick.  Studio, Millburn Street, Kirkcudbright, 1890s.

Landscape painter, photographer, poet and journalist, travelled extensively throughout British Isles before settling in Dundrennan.  Did 40 illustrations for school friend S R Crockett. (Raider Country).  Illustrated J Maxwell Wood’s Smuggling in Galloway and Witchcraft in Galloway.  Work sometimes likened to that of Mouncey.  Photographs of the artist including with his three wheel vehicle SW 47 of 1906 in Stewartry museum.
