Father of the musician Cecil Coles. Wrote the appreciation of John Faed in the Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser, following his death in 1902. Marrried Thomas Bromley Blacklock's sister. This was his second marriage.
Closely involved in the local archaeological investigations of the time, which influenced Hornel and Henry with particular reference to their The Druids, Bringing Home the Mistletoe.
