Obituary, Dumfries Standard 28/1/1885

J B Johnstone became a Minister in the Free Church following his training as an artchitect.  His first charge was at Wolfelee, Roxburghshire from where he exhibited at the RSA.  From 1862 to 1878 he worked in Warrington before returning to Dumfries.  His retirement offered more time for landscape painting and, according to his obituary "the walls of his house were rendered literally florid with his artistic productions". He is also said "to have taken a kindly interest in all who displayed any artistic talent".  He spent a part of each simmer painting on the colvend coast.

The Rev Johnstone was buried at Hopekirk, Rule Water, Roxburghshire.

We would be interested to hear from anyone with more information about this artist or his works.
