QUILT ART is a group of professional quilt artists from Britain, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and America. The exhibition is curated by the British Quilt historian and academic Dr Sue Marks and members of the group. Founded in 1985, QUILT ART aims to extend the boundaries of quilting as an artistic medium and achieve wider recognition of the quilt as an art form. Surely some of the best loved illustrations in the world! Charles Oppenheimer, his father a German Jewish immigrant and his mother a Scots Wee Free, was born in 1875 in Manchester where he grew up, studied and entered his family's mosaic manufacturing business. A chance meeting in that city drew him in 1909, aged thirty three, to Kirkcudbright. His new career as an artist blossomed only to be interrupted by service at the front in the Great War. Returning in 1919 he lived in the town until his death in 1961.…
