Talk with Kozo Hoshino, The Victor Murphy Trust
Japanese Influence on Scottish Art of the Turn of Century, 1860 onward
For 50 years after the restoration of the Meiji Government in 1868, Scotland and Japan experienced mutual influence in the world of industry and aesthetic consciousness. This talk covers how this influence took place between the two countries. First, touching on political background which was taking place in Japan around 1860, this evolved to open up a pathway for penetration of Japanese art into Scotland. The second part of Kozo’s talk discusses the artistic ground of Japanese influence which was to be absorbed into actual artistic movement, centering particularity on Glasgow Boys. This talk discusses the flowering of Japanese influence in Scotland, centering on Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his design sense which is much derived from basic nature of Japanese art and craft.
