Mainly self taught, became a keen antiquarian following visit to Italy, 1857 and influenced by Dutch school following visit, 1878.

Royal Academy; Royal Scottish Academy; RSW; Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; Aberdeen Artists’ Society.

Member of The Smashers’ Club.

Notes:

Original member of the Smashers Group.  His landscapes shown to best advantage in his watercolours.  PRSA 1882-1891.  Exhibited a portrait of Thomas Faed at Royal Scottish Academy 1851.  Exhibited a number of views of Lochmaben at Royal Scottish Academy.   He was Knighted in 1882.
